National Security Council

Trump set up his National Security Council today. When you think of the term “National Security Council”, what comes to mind? You need people with knowledge about foreign policy, armed forces, and intelligence, at a minimal, right? Trump has decided to remove from permanent position the following: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (military advisor) Director of National Intelligence (intelligence advisor) Instead, he added White House Chief Strategist - Steve Bannon - to a permanent position. more »

Muslim Ban

It’s going to be an exhausting 4 years.

History will ask - What did you do when the U.S. tried to ban Muslims?

I just became a monthly donor to ACLU.

You should, too.

Rich/Poor in USA

It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: “If you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?”

Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves. This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class since, say, Napoleonic times.

Kurt Vonnegut in Slaughterhouse-Five

Review: Ready Player One

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline Finally make my way to this book after many recommendations. A huge fan service to anyone that grew up around the 80’s. Very enjoyable if you have ever been interested in gaming, geekiness and 80’s in general. From a geeky point of view, I would question the possiblity of some of the technologies involved, but you can certain see a lot parallel to what’s available right now (VR, automation, social network that actually disassociates you from the society) more »

This is going well

So if this is the honeymoon period for a new president, what’s going to happen after it?

This is not normal

I think we can stop saying “This is not normal” after every new thing Trump does.

It is already true and has been for a while.

We fucking know it by now.

Nothing is normal with him.

Today

TPP and Something Else

So Trump signed the order to withdraw from Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). This was one of the pillars from his campaign, so it’s not surprising. So who benefited from TPP? Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States of America and Vietnam Who is NOT in the TPP? China The entire reason we pursued TPP is to act as a foil to China’s ambition in the region. more »
