Review: Riyria Chronicles Part One

The Crown Tower and The Rose and the Thorn by Michael J. Sullivan

After reading Riyria Revelations, this set of novels is a perfect stop to catch up with more adventures of Royce and Hadrian.

The Crown Tower is the beginning of the story where Hadrian just came back to Avryn after his time spent in Calis. His destination is the University in Sheridan where Prof. Arcadius has a message. Obviously, this trip sets up the meeting of Royce and Hadrian. They started with an instant dislike of each other. It seems Royce is entirely capable of completing the “main quest” by himself. Hadrian has to play catch up here.

Rather neatly, the book tells the story of Gwen and how she was foretold about Royce and to expect him in Medford. Her dedication to this future / foretelling is certainly important in understanding her later actions (not telling Royce about Mercy).

The Rose and the Thorn continues the story a year later and sets up the stage for Albert Winslow and Hilfred. The story about Hilfred shows the butterfly effect of one unrelated detail about Hilfred’s parents leading to the eventual downfall of Melengar. It also shows that Saldur was never that masterful planner and could have failed his mission multiple times.

Also, angry Royce is scary.

These 2 books can nearly be considered one long story. It gave a lot background to book regulars in Riyria Revelations. I wouldn’t miss them if you have read Riyria Revelations and is looking for more.

Thumbs up!
